Zoology science fair projects are an exciting way of learning about animal and aqua life. Let’s begin with examining amimal’s linkage in the food chain and their different skeletal structure.
Doing and research and finding background information on your subject is one of the six steps of the scientific method that you must do as part of your project.
Let’s touch on each subject in more detail to get your noodle going.
Reproduction
Reproduction is all about the survival of the specie. It involves the interaction of two types of cells, a sperm and an egg. As these two are united they lead to a moment which creates a new life. There are two ways reproduction occurs.
The two ways are sexual and asexual reproduction. Sexual reproduction refers to a process that requires the interaction and contributions of genetic material from two individuals, a male and a female. This type of reproduction is usually supported by behavior and physical adaptations that are used to attract a mate and to encourage genetic diversity.
Asexual reproduction, on the other hand, requires only a single organism. This organism reproduces through division of its own cells or through other unique processes that require the genetic input of only one organism.
Learn more about these processes below.
- Sexual Reproduction – Most animals reproduce sexually. It requires the participation of two individuals from the same species, one male and one female. The goal of this process is to combine the genetic material from the male with the genetic material for the female, with the hopes of passing on the strengths of each individual to the offspring.
- Asexual Reproduction – This method of reproduction is not interested in genetic variety. It allows a single organism to recreate an identical copy of itself. Asexual reproduction is only utilized by lower level organisms.
Science Project Idea:
Examine the characteristics of sexual and asexual reproductive animals. Define the differences and similarities.
Food Chain
This subject represents the predator and prey linkage within their specified habitat where the organisms can receive energy and their basic nutrients. In this environment, living organisms are eaten by another higher (often much bigger) living organism. There are three types of eating habits of the food chain. They are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
- Carnivores – living organisms that gain energy and nutrients from preying on other animals.
- Herbivores – Collective group of living organisms that only feed on plant life for their energy and nutrients.
- Omnivores – living organisms that feed on both animal tissue (carnivores) and plant life (herbivores). The term pertains to humans and a variety of other animals including some birds like ravens.
Science Project Idea:
Identify the connection between animals and plants in a local food chain reaction. Then predict what will happen if a animal or plant from that food chain is removed. How will the food chain react?
Skeletal Structures
This is the living organism system made up of bones, cartilages and joints which supports their body.
Science Project Idea:
Compare the similarities and differences between animal and human skeletal structures. Hypothesize what would happen if human skeletons were modified with an animal skeletal features, such as hollow bones commonly found in birds.
Caution: Check with your teacher before doing a zoology science fair projects. Many schools want to make sure that you are being humane to animals and some science fairs will not allow live animals to be part of an experiment.
