It is not too early to start shopping for something to wear to your daughter’s winter wedding. In fact, with all of the cold weather attire arriving in the stores now, it is the ideal time to start looking to avoid a desperate last minute scramble. These chic style ideas for winter weddings will help you get inspired for your mother of the bride (or groom) outfit.
Ball Skirt + White Blouse
Unless your daughter is actually having a holiday themed wedding, it is best to avoid looking too Christmasy. Go for elegant and chic over snowflakes or red and green. One of my favorite looks for a winter mother of the bride ensemble is a crisp white blouse with a long dupioni ball skirt. I recently saw this combination in the Talbots “Aisle Say” collection, and I thought it looked fabulous. If Carolina Herrera is one of your style icons, this outfit would be perfect. They showed it with a beaded sash at the waist for extra sparkle, which was a great festive touch. Play up the sparkle with a pearl and crystal necklace to coordinate.
Luxurious Velvet
For a wedding taking place around Thanksgiving through Valentine’s Day, consider wearing velvet. The luxurious fabric is always wonderful for a special event in the winter. If you are one of those women who doesn’t feel comfortable in a dress or skirt, you could put together a very beautiful outfit around a pair of velvet trousers. Flowing wide leg silk velvet trousers look sophisticated and elegant with a jeweled blouse or a silk shell. Wear them with satin flats or kitten heel shoes so your feet will also look great and feel comfortable.
Add Special Embellishments
Now it is time to talk about dresses for the mother of the bride or groom. The winter is the ideal time to year to wear a dress in a more substantial fabric like satin, dupioni, or taffeta. If the wedding will be very formal, a floor length dress will be very appropriate. For daytime, I like the idea of a very fancy dress to the knee. Here’s a fun tip: you can make a simple sheath dress more special by adding embellishments to it. For example, I once had a sheath dress made with a lovely embroidered silk. To give it the extra flair it needed to wear to a winter wedding, I added a vintage fur collar around the neckline of the dress (faux fur would work too of course). Another idea is to add a jeweled belt around the waistline of a classic dress. With your own special touches and the right jewelry to complement it, your wedding ensemble will be stunning.
Shine in a Cocktail Dress
Another gorgeous dress idea is a cocktail dress. You could choose one in a special fabric like gold lace over a dark brown lining, one with crystal beading, or one with a luxurious embroidery. The only caveat is to avoid cocktail dresses that are too short or too plunging at the neckline. You want to look beautiful, but not scandalous, after all! Sweep your hair up into an elegant twist, slip into a fancy pair of shoes, and be prepared to look almost as good as the bride herself.
