If you’ve never been to Vanuatu, here’s what you can look forward to.
About Vanuatu
Vanuatu is situated to the north-east of Australia in the Pacific Ocean. It comprises of 83 islands, which are divided into six geographic provinces – making things a bit easier to navigate!
Like most islands in the Pacific, Vanuatu was created thousands of years ago as the result of numerous volcanic eruptions. This has meant that the soil is very fertile, the forests are lush and green, and the landscape dramatic and diverse.
Vanuatu attractions
Vanuatu is full of things to see and do, no matter what you’re after. Whether you want to find an unspoilt white beach, a rainforest paradise or even roll around in mud (it’s good for you, promise!) – you’ll find it all in Vanuatu.
The capital of Vanuatu is Port Vila, where most visitors fly into. If you want a party atmosphere and great shopping then Port Vila is a great place to be based. The markets are a particularly popular attraction in Port Vila.
Around the island of Efate (where Port Vila is) you’ll also find some good diving and snorkelling sites. It is also in Efate where you can visit the natural hot springs and, if you wish, indulge in a mud bath!
Away from the bright lights of the capital are dozens of islands to choose from. As well as the beautiful beaches (which we’ll talk about later), you’ll find other amazing natural wonders including active volcanoes such as Mount Yasur – one of the world’s most active volcanoes.
The impressive Siri Falls waterfall, on Gaua Island, is also a must-see.
Nightlife in Vanuatu
So you’re off on holiday and you’re ready to party – no problem! Where better to enjoy a cocktail or two than on a warm, tropical island?
One thing you will come across on your Vanuatu holidays is a drink made of Kava, known as a ‘shell’. Kava comes from the root of a locally grown tree and is the world’s only legal narcotic. However, it is not an alcoholic drink – it is an intoxicant. It is not addictive and to be honest tastes awful but as they say, when in Rome.
If you’re staying at a resort you’ll find that most of the nightlife centres around events held there. Melanesian nights are very common and include traditional dances, plenty of drinks, great food and a vibrant atmosphere.
For those that are staying in Port Vila, you’ll find a great choice of night time entertainment options including bars, nightclubs, casinos and live music. Most bars don’t charge an entry fee and there are no restrictions on opening hours – so you’re free to stay out until the party’s over!
Beaches in Vanuatu
A guide to Vanuatu is not complete without mentioning some of the best beaches. Really there are no bad beaches in Vanuatu, but if you want the cream of the crop try these.
Champagne Beach is an idyllic palm tree-lined beach that is literally a beautiful creamy champagne colour. There are no resorts at this beach so expect peaceful tranquility.
Just a short distance from Port Vila is the stunning Erakor Beach. Picture postcard-perfect white sand and turquoise waters.
Other beaches worth checking out include: Bokissa Beach, Eratap Beach, Hideaway Beach and Aore Beach.
