When it comes to installing a new roof, it can be hard to choose the right type of roof. Most people want one that’s inexpensive and will last for decades. Asphalt shingle roofs are both inexpensive and durable, and they are the most common type of roofing product on the market. Asphalt shingle roofs are even more prevalent than the metal roofs that adorn farmhouses and barns.

The pros of asphalt shingles are numerous. They are durable, reliable, energy efficient and easily repaired. They also look good and come in a variety of different colors which means they can easily be picked in a color that matches or compliments the house where it’s installed.

Asphalt shingles are durable. Most shingles made of asphalt are rated for a 20 year life, and depending on where the roof is located in the country, the useful life of the shingles will range between 14 and 21 years. That means that during the average span of a 30 year mortgage, the shingles will only have to be replaced twice during the lifetime of the mortgage.

Asphalt shingle roofs can also be easily repaired which means that the homeowner could conceivably repair minor damage to the roof without hiring an expensive roofing contractor. That’s money saved on roofing repairs.
By comparison, metal roofs can dent and rust which creates leaks and hard to repair damage, and depending on where the damage is, it can mean hiring a contractor to perform expensive repairs and replacement of the metal panels.

New roof installations of asphalt shingles also come in a wide variety of colors just like metal roofs. Asphalt shingle roofs no longer come only in black or shades of grey and green. Shingles made of asphalt now come in red, blue, blue-grey, grey, black, tan, brown and silver as well as many other colors. It’s never been easier to match a roof to the color of the house than it is today.

Asphalt roofs are also energy efficient and are eligible for tax credits depending on whether or not the shingle is energy star rated. If the asphalt shingle roofing material is Energy Star rated, than it is energy efficient and eligible for tax credits which makes the roof itself less expensive through tax credits and will lower the household utility bills.

Shingle roofs are also quiet. Weather and the sounds of rain do not permeate through a shingle roof. Metal roofs, on the other hand, allow the sounds of rain and hail to penetrate the home and cause annoying noise and clanging that can be distracting to the homeowners.

For a new roof installation, choose a shingle roof made from asphalt. They are inexpensive, easy to repair and have a long life. They are also quiet and resistant to expensive damage such as falling branches and hail, and they can be purchased with Energy Star ratings.
